Bridal Fashion Week Recap and 3 Looks for Under 2K

Like a lot of you, we are swooning over the new Fall collections that bridal designers have been showing at NYBridal Fashion Week and Barcelona Fashion Week. From Kleinfeld's Randy Fenoli's bridal collection debut to Christian Siriano's welcomed introduction of couture gowns in sizes up to 24, we are so excited to see these fresh new trends in bridal that will be arriving in stores this summer.

Most designers already have their new Fall collections on their websites. So if your favorite designer hasn't updated their websites, they will be soon. We are lucky that two of our designers, MoriLee and Sophia Tolli have their Fall collections up on their websites and let me say, they are absolutely GORGEOUS! Chanza and I had a hard time deciding which dresses to order for our Curvy Rose brides.

We understand that budget is a concern for all brides and we are striving to make sure that we have quality, on trend dresses at a variety of price points. Our sample rack is chock full of beautiful, gently worn dresses priced at a steal. Some bridal stores don't take care of their samples. They can be smelly, sweaty and even dirty. Not here at Curvy Rose. We take care of all of our dress samples. That's one of the reasons why we have 1 on 1 appointments and help you into each gown. And for the first time, we've made all of these dresses available on our website for purchase. So if your wedding is coming up and you've missed the deadlines for ordering your gown, check out what we have. They won't be in our store long as we only have about 20 dresses or so and smaller sizes are going fast. You won't be disappointed!

Our MoriLee collection is another great option for brides who are looking for a gown under $2K. We added MoriLee this Spring and couldn't be more happy with the style and fit of their gowns. In fact, this past Sunday NYTimesFashion featured MoriLee's designer, Madeline Gardener, as 2 of the top 11 dresses under $2K. Madeline Gardener is one of the best in the bridal industry and we are proud to have MoriLee, BLU and Julietta lines in our store.

Keeping in mind that the median dress budget in the US is less than $1,500 we featured 3 dresses with entire looks (including dress, headpiece and veil) for under $2k. These looks became our window display for the week. We even bumbled through our first Facebook Live and Instagram Story. We are still a work in progress, but we couldn't be more happy to serve our Curvy brides with on trend, great fitting dresses at an awesome price point.

For the Bride with Curves

Curvy is the new black in fashion these days and I'm thrilled that the time has come where women of all shapes and sizes are celebrated for who they are, not how small their dress size happens to be. For someone like me who has always struggled with weight, I love seeing curvy women on the covers of Sports Illustrated and Ebony magazinesI'm loving @Gabifresh, @TheAshleyGraham, and @FullerFigureFullerBust on Instagram right now.

I'm also insanely excited about the plus-size bridal movement. Whether you love lace, beading, or prefer elegant satin or boho chic, it's out there. There are so many beautiful gowns available today that I giggle with glee. @PrettyPearBride is an AWESOME bridal resource for curvy girls like us. Finding photos of curvy brides are still rare, but Shafonne @PrettyPearBride showcases brides in fabulous, stylish wedding gowns that you'll enjoy.

I love this blog . It is a great resource for curvy brides.

I love thumbing through wedding magazines and clicking through websites from my favorite wedding gown designers, but the real proof is in trying these gorgeous gowns on. You know the saying, what looks great on one person may look horrid on someone else. Your dream dress may not fit the way you hoped, so having an open mind and finding a bridal retailer you feel great working with is so important. At Curvy Rose, we understand your concerns and many of us (including myself) have had similar journey's in finding our dream gowns.

You may be saying, my fiance loves my curves, and most days I wear my curves with confidence, but this whole gown shopping thing sucks. Will I find a gown like the David Tutera one my cousin wore at her wedding last year? Aw, maybe I should just go to one of those BIG BOX places and grab a dress off the rack. It might not be as stylish or high quality, but doggonnit at least Aunt Martha will stop talking about the weight she lost on that liquid diet and I won't have to watch my best friend look the other way when I'm forced into a gown that is three sizes too small.

Don't settle for less when you deserve so much more! Think about it, your wedding album lasts forever (I just looked at my parents wedding album the other day).  This is your chance to look STUNNING on your wedding day, to walk down that aisle KNOWING that even with the help of some crazy diet, Aunt Martha never looked THIS good.

So what are you waiting for? Make an appointment with Curvy Rose and put them all to shame. We are a new store offering a range of styles from well-known designers like Sophia Tolli and MoriLee (arriving in the Fall). We also carry other designers such as Bonny and Callista. New styles are arriving every month, so take a look at our collections page to see our current inventory. Remember, the proof is not in how a gown looks on someone in your Instagram feed, but how great it looks on you. Visit our boutique and receive the bridal experience you deserve!

The Story of Curvy Rose

Before opening Curvy Rose I was a writer. I worked for small and large companies, writing product descriptions, scripts for television, and speeches for organizational leaders. No one ever thought, least of all me, that I would own a bridal shop one day. I loved my career, especially the creativity of it all. I met interesting people and was able to capture their vision through the transformative power of words. I was content until a man walked into my life and changed it forever. His name was James Riley. We met at work. He was a videographer and I was the writer for a television program. It wasn't love at first sight for me, but it was for him and for a couple of years we worked on different teams, getting to know each other from afar. Like a lot of women, I've kissed my share of frogs, but James was different. He was kind, generous and believed in me. I didn't have to dumb myself down or hide my accomplishments or abilities. His sincere friendship won me over and after two years of passing each other in the hallway, and four months of dating, he proposed.

Always the planner, I set off to find my dress the day after James put that ring on my finger. Truth be told, I had been thumbing through bridal magazines for decades hoping that one day I would wear one of those beautiful designs by Demetrios, Lazaro, or Eve of Milady. I love weddings, but I REALLY love the splendor of a bride in her dress. In my mind, the dress sets the tone for everything. It's a direct reflection of a bride's personal style. It's one of the few opportunities women have to take the stage like that red carpet maven in the magazine. We get to create a vision, an emotion, a radiance that is uniquely our own. Even though James told me often that I was beautiful, he understood my passion for the gown of my dreams and encouraged me to find the dress that would make me feel gorgeous on the day when all eyes would be on me.

My journey began at a well-known bridal salon in metro Atlanta. I was quickly disappointed by the insensitivity of the salespeople showing me styles that I couldn't try on because their dresses were no larger than a size 12. I was stuffed into gowns that were way too small and asked to imagine how I would look. When there was no way for me to get into a dress, I was told to slip my head into the dress hanger and imagine the gown that way as I watched smaller woman try on various styles, textures and shapes. I tried not to cry as a large chunk of my backside was hanging out from a dress the consultant was certain would work. This scene played out time after time in all the bridal boutiques I visited. It was 2008 and no one carried gowns in sizes larger than a 14.

I'm curvy and busty, a 36G in fact, so even if I could get a gown past my hips, my boobs kept falling out. To complicate things most of the gowns were outdated or didn't look good on me. I even traveled to Miami hoping to find "The One," only to choose something that was okay, but not great. I was giving up. One of the wonderful moments in my life and I couldn't find a dress.

Once again my cheerleader, James, encouraged me not to give up. After some calling around and asking specific questions, I found a bridal shop who was willing to help me. It took a lot of trust and creativity because once again, none of her gowns were in my size. But as I explained the vision of my wedding, the fabric I loved and the shape I liked, she began to guide me toward the style and shape that captured my radiant spirit and my love for James. It was a collaborative effort and when I say I had to TRUST her, I really did because my dress had to be created. It took five months to make and boy was I nervous about it. In the end, my gown turned out great, but I know that most times it doesn't. So I was blessed on that score.

This is me in my gown. It was created from three different dresses. Thank goodness you don't have to go the custom route if you don't want to. Many designers today are making high quality gowns in plus sizes and at Curvy Rose you can actually try them on.

My marriage to James was a great one too. We adored each other and had two gorgeous daughters together before he unexpectedly passed away in 2013. James was my game-changer. He pushed me to think outside the box and consider helping other curvy women find their gowns. It wasn't until he was gone and I was laid off my job that I took a leap of faith and started Curvy Rose.

The wonderful thing about this story is that you don't have to go through the frustration I endured eight years ago to find YOUR dress. Many designers are making gowns specifically for curvy women and more stores are carrying popular styles in plus size. Here's the thing, if you are curvier than a size 20 you may find that in a traditional store they do not carry samples in sizes that will fit you best.

If you are tired of the big box approach or not being able to find a quality gown in your size, you might want to try a plus size bridal salon like Curvy Rose. Here we understand what you are looking for and we will do what we can to help create the vision you desire. Just like the woman who helped me with my gown, we will guide you through the process, honoring your privacy while helping to create the vision, emotion and radiance that is uniquely your own.

Not a day goes by that I don't think about James. He inspired me in ways that no one else could. Our marriage was truly joy-filled and It taught me a lot about trust, genuine friendship and the power of serving each other, especially in tough times. I hope that Curvy Rose visitors will experience the love and support I had in finding a dress, but more importantly I wish every person who walks through our doors a marriage filled with joy and a romance that will last forever.
