Planning a weddings is STRESS-FUL! Regardless of how long you’ve been engaged, wedding planning can cause bundles of stress. From choosing your bridal party, to picking the venue and choosing the guest list, everyone is going to get on your nerves, even at times your fiancé.

Planning the wedding you’ve dreamed about can be overwhelming. There’s so much to think about and so many “To-Do’s” to check off the list. So how do you handle the pressure while being the graceful bride your fiancé adores? Here at Curvy Rose, we have a few tips on how to manage the stressful moments and enjoy the process a little more.

Create a timeline

Yeah, we live in a digital age and we can put everything in our phones or tablets, but it really does help to write things down. It’s stressful enough planning and scheduling appointments and events, but nothing is more stressful than temporarily forgetting about them! Writing a timeline of everything you need to do before your big day helps you stay organized. This timeline can be made in the form of a “vision board” or it can be compiled into the biggest binder you can find. There are a lot of bridal organizers on the market that can help you. Some even have dividers for categories such as: catering, budget, venue, and guest list. If you don’t want to carry a binder, consider some online planning options. The Knot.com and Pinterest also have have great wedding timeline tools that will help you stay on track.

Creating a timeline early also helps you to prioritize. Although most couples spend on average $20,000 or more on their wedding, many do not. No matter your budget, it’s important to pinpoint the areas that are most important to you and your fiancé. Whether great pictures are a must have, your dream dress or a killer reception, having a timeline helps you to book vendors before they are snapped up. Don't forget to do things with your fiancé that don't involve wedding planning

We all know how time consuming wedding planning can be. Once you get the ball rolling, you’ll have so much to talk about. Just don’t forget why you’re getting married in the first place--the love you have for your fiancé. Whether both of you are equally invested in wedding plans or not, remember to do things with him that don’t involve your wedding. Make sure you are talking about non-wedding related topics. Make it a priority to do something once a week that helps you and your fiancé stay connected. Go to the movies, hang out with friends, discover projects you can do together.

Remember to make time for yourself

Here at Curvy Rose, we always want to see our brides taking care of themselves. When you’re stressed about your wedding, it’s easy to fall off balance. During this stressful time keep in mind your physical and mental health. Take plenty of personal breaks when you feel yourself becoming too overwhelmed. This could look like taking time out in your day to pray or meditate, listen to music, treat yourself to a coffee or treat, or binging on Netflix for the evening.

Many brides often add dieting to their planning goals. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be healthy, but when losing weight is motivated by negative self-talk or fear of criticism, you need to let it go. Remember, you are beautiful just as you are! Consider adding exercise to your routine rather than a strict diet. Exercise is a great stress reliever. Whether you lose a pound or gain a couple, walking, taking a yoga or dance class will do wonders for your mental and physical health. You’ll sleep better too.

Set boundaries with your helpers

It is important to set boundaries with your loved ones during this stressful time because what you allow now is what will continue in the future. Usually, it is your mom or mother-in-law who are making the most suggestions on what you “should do.” Of course it is hard to be firm in the beginning, but the earlier you get it off your chest, the better.

A lot of people will offer you advice and assistance during this process, whether they’re married or not. I once knew a bride who was doing her wedding on a budget and wanted to book a small venue that she had fallen in love with. However, her mother-in-law told her that if she booked the venue, then none of her friends would want to come because she had told them that her son would be getting married at a country club. She then proceeded to tell this bride that if she let her book their venue at the country club, she would pay for the venue, food and drinks. This put the bride in a stressful position because while she didn’t like this venue, she also knew that if her mother-in-law paid for the venue then she could allocate her own money to other aspects of the wedding. After a couple of weeks of being stressed out over her decision, she was able to talk to her mother-in-law and explain why she and her fiancé wanted a smaller venue.

Remember it is never too late to have a moment of honesty with the person that is causing you unnecessary stress. When you have these moments of honesty, be sure to start by thanking them for the nice things they have done for you. Then, give them a frank explanation of how their suggestions or actions have caused you more stress. It’s always good to vent with a friend beforehand or practice a few times to make sure you’re idea of firm doesn't sound angry.

Start a journal about why you want to marry your fiancé

You can write this at your own pace, and just set the goal of writing your last journal entry either the  night before your wedding day or the morning of your wedding. You can start writing about the point when you realized you wanted to marry him, or you can start writing from the point of your engagement. Taking the time out to write down all of the reasons why you’re marrying your future husband is not only therapeutic, but it also serves as a nice heartfelt gift to give him. You can both look back on it from time to time!

If you're DIY-ing everything, think about delegating

When it comes to working on big projects, we all have a hard time delegating tasks. However, with a wedding, these tasks can overwhelm you if you don’t have a plan. If you know that you want to be in charge of all the bigger aspects of your wedding, then start to delegate the smaller projects to someone in your bridal party or family member. This gives them something to do, while also keeping your load manageable.

Unfortunately, the stress of planning a wedding is unavoidable. Regardless of the length of your engagement, the size of your wedding, whether you hire a professional planner, or elope, you’re going to experience some stress. Just remember, you don’t have to be stressed the whole time you’re planning! It’s not healthy. You want to be able to look back on this time and smile on at least some of it.
