Prepping for Your Bridal Appointment

Here at Curvy Rose, we are committed to making sure that all of our guests receive top-notch customer service. From the moment you walk through our doors, we want you to feel welcomed, informed and attended to.

We get tons of questions about what to expect during a bridal  appointment. How many people should I bring? Are kids allowed? What should I wear? Do I need to bring anything?

Of course our answers to these questions will mainly focus on our boutique here in Atlanta, but most bridal salons typically follow similar guidelines.

How many people should I bring?

Your desired number of people should be no more than three. We know, we know this very small number may be a shock and might even throw a major wrench in your plans. I'm your best friend, sister, cousin, mother-in-law, mother, grandmother, aunt, and everyone else wants to share this important experience with you. We totally get that. Thing is, you are going to be trying on a lot of dresses with different shapes and styles. Everyone will have an opinion and with every dress you try on, the pressure to choose without hurting someones feelings can be  overwhelming. Remember, the focus should be on you, your vision and your bridal budget. Too many voices leads to frustration, disappointment and sometimes confusion too.

Perhaps you can invite your best friend and fashionable sister to your first appointment. Once you've narrowed the choices down to the top 3, invite your mother and mother-in-law to that appointment. That way, everyone has an opportunity to share in the moment without feeling slighted.

Most bridal boutiques are fairly small and restrict guests to 4 people. So before you promise anyone a “judge seat” to your say yes to the dress moment, consider this limitation. If by chance you must bring a larger group, please let the store know before your appointment, so that they can prepare or shift your appointment to a time when they can accommodate more guests. You don't want to show up only to be turned away because of the size of your group.

How do I pick these people?

First and foremost, you want to bring people who are supportive and loving. If you have to dig down deep for those qualities in the person you’re thinking of bringing, they probably shouldn’t be there. Invite people who are supportive and genuinely have your best interest at heart. (e.g. “I will support any dress you choose, as long as I think it looks good on you).

You also want to pick people who know and respect your true style. This eliminates the possibility of someone trying to guilt you into purchasing a gown you’re only lukewarm about.

We hate to say it, but from what we've seen, sometimes the person who is the most supportive may not be your best friend or your mom. This should be a joyful moment, a right of passage. I don't know why, but weddings can bring out the best and the worst in people. Really do a gut check and consider the most honest, sincere and supportive members of your tribe and choose those people.

Just remember, less people and opinions = more peace for you.

Are kids allowed?

Every bridal salon is different, but at Curvy Rose we cannot allow children under 12 to attend bridal appointments. We understand that sometimes bringing young children often seems unavoidable. But due to liability reasons and their safety, we cannot allow children to be present.

What should I wear?

This is a whole list here, so take out your notepads! Chances are, you’ll be visiting more than one bridal salon on your appointment day(s). This means you’ll be getting in and out of your clothes, but also the various gowns you’ll be trying on.

Just make it easier on yourself and wear something simple and comfortable. This may seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many brides come to their bridal appointments without wearing undergarments, so please wear them.

Speaking of underwear, please bring shapewear to ALL of your appointments. You'd be surprised how good shape wear can transform the shape of your figure in a wedding dress. PLEASE don't go the cheap route. Invest in shape wear with good compression especially around your middle and hip area. I'm telling you, it will really make a difference.

What a difference shape wear makes. Invest in quality structured shape wear like Spanx to ALL of your bridal appointments. You'll love the difference.

Bring a strapless bra

Another must have is a good supportive strapless bra. I know they can be hard to find, especially for some of us with larger chests, but they can be found. Here's a tip: If you are spilling out of the strapless bra you currently have, or find yourself pulling up your bra every time you wear that sexy top with spaghetti straps, you NEED a new bra. A good bra, even a strapless one should fully support the girls without spilling out or sliding down. No matter how well constructed the dress may be, it can only do so much. Do yourself and the dress a favor by getting properly fitted for a bra. If you are in Georgia, LiviRae is a great place to visit.

Do I need to bring anything More?

If you have already purchased your shoes, we strongly encourage you to bring those. If you don’t have your shoes, then bring a pair that match the height of the shoes you plan to wear. This way we can see where your hemline actually hits, which comes in handy for the seamstress during alterations.

If you have some of your accessories, we’d suggest bringing those. These accessories may include a brooch you plan to wear, jewelry, or hair accessories.

If you don’t have these accessories, that's okay. Bringing a few pictures of what you're thinking about wearing is just as good. This will help us to match gowns to your wedding style and theme, so you don’t waste time trying on gowns that don’t even fit your vision.

If you have a wedding planner/binder, bring that along with you because chances are all of your wedding ideas will be in there.

Other tips

Having an idea of what you are looking for is always helpful. If it's your first appointment, bring pictures of gowns you like, and be open to trying on styles you haven't considered. First appointments are great opportunities to try on different styles and shapes. Have fun with it because every appointment after that should really be focused on finding YOUR dress.

Do some research! If you haven't gotten a stack of bridal magazines to thumb through, feel free to drop by your local store and pick up a few. I admit, most won't have plus size models, but you can familiarize yourself with current styles and certain designers. Once you've figured out what you might like, research which stores carry that designer or specific dress. A word of caution, most stores don't carry the entire collection from one designer. A single collection could have more than 50 dresses and most stores carry at least 3 to 5 collections. Call ahead to see if they have the dress you like. Even if they have something similar, take a chance. You never know. You may fall in love with a gown that’s not on your list!

Consider how your venue and dress will work together

When considering the length, style, and fabric of your gown, it’s a good idea to also consider your venue. Are you getting married at a church? A plantation? A farm? Your  backyard? How will your gown work with or against that event space?

Be upfront about your budget

We want to show you gowns that you can envision yourself in, but we don’t want to show you gowns that are out of your price range. So please be as honest as you can about budget and who will be paying for the dress. It really goes a long a way in helping your consultant find YOUR dress.

Make sure that this budget includes any necessary alterations, your veil, extra accessories, and undergarments. A lot of brides often forget about these hidden costs and find that they either go over budget or have to scale back on their gown budget.

HAVE FUN!!!

If all else fails, plan on having fun during your bridal appointment. Despite what anyone says or implies, this day is about Y-O-U. Enjoy it. Revel in it. Make the best of it! As always, Curvy Rose is here to assist in whatever you need, if you have more questions about bridal appointments, feel free to contact us. We are happy to help.
