Bridal Fashion Week Recap and 3 Looks for Under 2K

Like a lot of you, we are swooning over the new Fall collections that bridal designers have been showing at NYBridal Fashion Week and Barcelona Fashion Week. From Kleinfeld's Randy Fenoli's bridal collection debut to Christian Siriano's welcomed introduction of couture gowns in sizes up to 24, we are so excited to see these fresh new trends in bridal that will be arriving in stores this summer.

Most designers already have their new Fall collections on their websites. So if your favorite designer hasn't updated their websites, they will be soon. We are lucky that two of our designers, MoriLee and Sophia Tolli have their Fall collections up on their websites and let me say, they are absolutely GORGEOUS! Chanza and I had a hard time deciding which dresses to order for our Curvy Rose brides.

We understand that budget is a concern for all brides and we are striving to make sure that we have quality, on trend dresses at a variety of price points. Our sample rack is chock full of beautiful, gently worn dresses priced at a steal. Some bridal stores don't take care of their samples. They can be smelly, sweaty and even dirty. Not here at Curvy Rose. We take care of all of our dress samples. That's one of the reasons why we have 1 on 1 appointments and help you into each gown. And for the first time, we've made all of these dresses available on our website for purchase. So if your wedding is coming up and you've missed the deadlines for ordering your gown, check out what we have. They won't be in our store long as we only have about 20 dresses or so and smaller sizes are going fast. You won't be disappointed!

Our MoriLee collection is another great option for brides who are looking for a gown under $2K. We added MoriLee this Spring and couldn't be more happy with the style and fit of their gowns. In fact, this past Sunday NYTimesFashion featured MoriLee's designer, Madeline Gardener, as 2 of the top 11 dresses under $2K. Madeline Gardener is one of the best in the bridal industry and we are proud to have MoriLee, BLU and Julietta lines in our store.

Keeping in mind that the median dress budget in the US is less than $1,500 we featured 3 dresses with entire looks (including dress, headpiece and veil) for under $2k. These looks became our window display for the week. We even bumbled through our first Facebook Live and Instagram Story. We are still a work in progress, but we couldn't be more happy to serve our Curvy brides with on trend, great fitting dresses at an awesome price point.

Our Curvy Rose Story

I love weddings, but I REALLY love the splendor of a bride in her dress. In my mind, the dress sets the tone for everything. It's a direct reflection of a bride's personal style and for this special moment she gets to create a vision, an emotion, a radiance that is uniquely her own.

Curvy Rose was inspired by my own experience shopping for a wedding dress 10 years ago. I was stuffed into gowns that were way too small and asked to imagine how I would look. When there was no way for me to get into a dress, I was told to slip my head into the dress hanger and imagine the gown that way as I watched smaller woman try on various styles, textures and shapes. I tried not to cry as a large chunk of my backside was hanging out from a dress the consultant was certain would work. This scene played out time after time in all the bridal boutiques I visited. It was 2008 and no one carried gowns in sizes larger than a bridal size 14, which fit like a size 10.

Curvy Rose opened its doors in April 2016 in our parents home. After almost a year gathering inventory and weathering the fits and starts of building a business from scratch, it was time to meet our first bride. Chanza and I were so nervous. This crazy idea began with less than $1k in the bank, a lot of ingenuity and the style sense we inherited from our grandmother, Rosa. With only five dresses to show, would that be good enough? With our mom and my mother-in-law looking on, the doorbell rang promptly at 2pm. With a deep breath, Chanza and I opened the door. There stood Tavi and her sister. Our first bride.

I greeted Tavi like I'd known her forever. She was radiant in a colorful cold-shoulder blouse. We quickly chatted about how excited we were to meet and welcome her to Curvy Rose. She shared that she had driven from a small town in Louisiana and it was her sister who had found us online. Finally their eyes landed on the few dresses that hung on the rack in my parents foyer. The moment of truth.

Even if Tavi and her sister were disappointed, they were gracious enough not to show it. Chanza carefully showed them each gown and we began. If memory serves, Tavi tried on four dresses and fell in love with two of them. Watching her eyes light up with every gown, made our day.  All of them were looked great on her, so it really came down to how she wanted to look on her special day.

In the end, Tavi didn't say "Yes to the dress" that day. We were disappointed, but optimistic about how things went. Chanza and I knew that if we continued to provide great customer service, personal attention and beautiful dresses, Curvy Rose could help more curvy women find the dress of their dreams. By the next Saturday, we had moved our modest little rack into a one room suite in a bank building. It was far from a typical storefront.

Our first store, a pop-up shop in a bank building that we set-up for every appointment.

We continued to meet brides and their families in our tiny pop-up shop after business hours and on Saturdays confident that we were on the right track. Two months passed and no one said, "Yes." Then Tavi called and said to one of our dresses! We were elated. Two more months passed and more beautiful brides visited Curvy Rose. Most said we had gorgeous gowns, many were surprised by how great they looked. But in the end, only a couple said "Yes."

By the end of the first summer, we had 15 dresses to show brides, but it seemed that number still wasn't enough. Doubt began to creep in. Every penny went into buying each dress we had on that rack. It felt like we were drowning and taking on more water in our sinking life raft. Call it grit or sheer craziness, we kept going, setting up for every appointment, smiling with every bride and committing to find her dress whether she chose us or not. Some took a chance and ALL were empowered to feel gorgeous on their wedding day.

By the end of our first year our little shop was bursting at the seams. We had more than 30 dresses in our inventory. Moving to a larger space became a priority. So the search began for our first storefront. We investigated a lot of options and locations in other cities, but decided that Fayetteville, GA was the place for us.

If there's anything to take away from this story is that hard work and steadfast commitment are the tools that make dreams fly.  If you want a bridal experience where you will be empowered to be your most radiant self, visit Curvy Rose.  Just like the woman who helped me look gorgeous on my day, we will guide you through the process and honor your privacy while helping to create the vision, emotion and radiance that is uniquely your own.

Prepping for Your Bridal Appointment

Here at Curvy Rose, we are committed to making sure that all of our guests receive top-notch customer service. From the moment you walk through our doors, we want you to feel welcomed, informed and attended to.

We get tons of questions about what to expect during a bridal  appointment. How many people should I bring? Are kids allowed? What should I wear? Do I need to bring anything?

Of course our answers to these questions will mainly focus on our boutique here in Atlanta, but most bridal salons typically follow similar guidelines.

How many people should I bring?

Your desired number of people should be no more than three. We know, we know this very small number may be a shock and might even throw a major wrench in your plans. I'm your best friend, sister, cousin, mother-in-law, mother, grandmother, aunt, and everyone else wants to share this important experience with you. We totally get that. Thing is, you are going to be trying on a lot of dresses with different shapes and styles. Everyone will have an opinion and with every dress you try on, the pressure to choose without hurting someones feelings can be  overwhelming. Remember, the focus should be on you, your vision and your bridal budget. Too many voices leads to frustration, disappointment and sometimes confusion too.

Perhaps you can invite your best friend and fashionable sister to your first appointment. Once you've narrowed the choices down to the top 3, invite your mother and mother-in-law to that appointment. That way, everyone has an opportunity to share in the moment without feeling slighted.

Most bridal boutiques are fairly small and restrict guests to 4 people. So before you promise anyone a “judge seat” to your say yes to the dress moment, consider this limitation. If by chance you must bring a larger group, please let the store know before your appointment, so that they can prepare or shift your appointment to a time when they can accommodate more guests. You don't want to show up only to be turned away because of the size of your group.

How do I pick these people?

First and foremost, you want to bring people who are supportive and loving. If you have to dig down deep for those qualities in the person you’re thinking of bringing, they probably shouldn’t be there. Invite people who are supportive and genuinely have your best interest at heart. (e.g. “I will support any dress you choose, as long as I think it looks good on you).

You also want to pick people who know and respect your true style. This eliminates the possibility of someone trying to guilt you into purchasing a gown you’re only lukewarm about.

We hate to say it, but from what we've seen, sometimes the person who is the most supportive may not be your best friend or your mom. This should be a joyful moment, a right of passage. I don't know why, but weddings can bring out the best and the worst in people. Really do a gut check and consider the most honest, sincere and supportive members of your tribe and choose those people.

Just remember, less people and opinions = more peace for you.

Are kids allowed?

Every bridal salon is different, but at Curvy Rose we cannot allow children under 12 to attend bridal appointments. We understand that sometimes bringing young children often seems unavoidable. But due to liability reasons and their safety, we cannot allow children to be present.

What should I wear?

This is a whole list here, so take out your notepads! Chances are, you’ll be visiting more than one bridal salon on your appointment day(s). This means you’ll be getting in and out of your clothes, but also the various gowns you’ll be trying on.

Just make it easier on yourself and wear something simple and comfortable. This may seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many brides come to their bridal appointments without wearing undergarments, so please wear them.

Speaking of underwear, please bring shapewear to ALL of your appointments. You'd be surprised how good shape wear can transform the shape of your figure in a wedding dress. PLEASE don't go the cheap route. Invest in shape wear with good compression especially around your middle and hip area. I'm telling you, it will really make a difference.

What a difference shape wear makes. Invest in quality structured shape wear like Spanx to ALL of your bridal appointments. You'll love the difference.

Bring a strapless bra

Another must have is a good supportive strapless bra. I know they can be hard to find, especially for some of us with larger chests, but they can be found. Here's a tip: If you are spilling out of the strapless bra you currently have, or find yourself pulling up your bra every time you wear that sexy top with spaghetti straps, you NEED a new bra. A good bra, even a strapless one should fully support the girls without spilling out or sliding down. No matter how well constructed the dress may be, it can only do so much. Do yourself and the dress a favor by getting properly fitted for a bra. If you are in Georgia, LiviRae is a great place to visit.

Do I need to bring anything More?

If you have already purchased your shoes, we strongly encourage you to bring those. If you don’t have your shoes, then bring a pair that match the height of the shoes you plan to wear. This way we can see where your hemline actually hits, which comes in handy for the seamstress during alterations.

If you have some of your accessories, we’d suggest bringing those. These accessories may include a brooch you plan to wear, jewelry, or hair accessories.

If you don’t have these accessories, that's okay. Bringing a few pictures of what you're thinking about wearing is just as good. This will help us to match gowns to your wedding style and theme, so you don’t waste time trying on gowns that don’t even fit your vision.

If you have a wedding planner/binder, bring that along with you because chances are all of your wedding ideas will be in there.

Other tips

Having an idea of what you are looking for is always helpful. If it's your first appointment, bring pictures of gowns you like, and be open to trying on styles you haven't considered. First appointments are great opportunities to try on different styles and shapes. Have fun with it because every appointment after that should really be focused on finding YOUR dress.

Do some research! If you haven't gotten a stack of bridal magazines to thumb through, feel free to drop by your local store and pick up a few. I admit, most won't have plus size models, but you can familiarize yourself with current styles and certain designers. Once you've figured out what you might like, research which stores carry that designer or specific dress. A word of caution, most stores don't carry the entire collection from one designer. A single collection could have more than 50 dresses and most stores carry at least 3 to 5 collections. Call ahead to see if they have the dress you like. Even if they have something similar, take a chance. You never know. You may fall in love with a gown that’s not on your list!

Consider how your venue and dress will work together

When considering the length, style, and fabric of your gown, it’s a good idea to also consider your venue. Are you getting married at a church? A plantation? A farm? Your  backyard? How will your gown work with or against that event space?

Be upfront about your budget

We want to show you gowns that you can envision yourself in, but we don’t want to show you gowns that are out of your price range. So please be as honest as you can about budget and who will be paying for the dress. It really goes a long a way in helping your consultant find YOUR dress.

Make sure that this budget includes any necessary alterations, your veil, extra accessories, and undergarments. A lot of brides often forget about these hidden costs and find that they either go over budget or have to scale back on their gown budget.

HAVE FUN!!!

If all else fails, plan on having fun during your bridal appointment. Despite what anyone says or implies, this day is about Y-O-U. Enjoy it. Revel in it. Make the best of it! As always, Curvy Rose is here to assist in whatever you need, if you have more questions about bridal appointments, feel free to contact us. We are happy to help.
